Are Metallics Still A thing? Will Tropical Return? Looking at SS17 High Street Homeware Trends With Next And Marks & Spencer

This 'Barclay Drinks Trolley', £299, is part of the 'Luxe Revival' collection for M&S SS17.

This week I was lucky enough to attend the press shows for both Marks and Spencer and Next Home, to get a sneak-peek at their new furniture and homeware collections for Spring & Summer 2017. If you are a regular reader you'll know I love scouring the High Street for interior pieces that look designer, but come with a High Street price tag!

First up was M&S. When I saw the invite to the Marks and Spencer show I knew it was going to be good:

Look at it! It's BLUSH and GOLD! And with a nice Art Deco style imprint. To be honest I wasn't disappointed. As I was shown around the 'Luxe Revival' collection by the nice M&S PR lady, I was salivating like my dog when in the presence of a dog treat.

The second show of the day was by Next Home, who had hired out the most architectural amazing place of 'One Marylebone' to host it. (They also had an awesome goodie bag containing, amongst other stuff, a cashmere scarf and knitted throw.)

So what's new in High Street home trends for 2017? And what's been put aside from 2016?

SAFARI REPLACES TROPICS:

The 'Safari' collection by M&S. Antelope heads, £99 each. Amber chair in Nyanga Tan, £599. Zebra cushion, £25. Tea, coffee and sugar tins, £12.50 for the set of 3. Anaya Pillar Candle Holder, £25.

At M&S the fun, bold, in your face trend of gold pineapples and palm leaf prints has been up-scaled to something more sophisticated: Safari. Zebra print and gold & silver safari animal objects dominated. While pineapple and palm trees had been scaled back to delicate images on grown-up gold edged mugs and plates.

Palm trees and pineapples are given a more sophisticated edge at M&S for SS17. Mugs, £6. Tall Afia Vase, £39.50. Wood and brass candle stick, £17.50. All other items TBC.

FILTERED DOWN FROM DESIGNER TO HIGH STREET: OIL SLICK

These two striking bowls are part of Next's 'Modish' Range.

The oil slick trend in homeware design began this year, and has filtered down to the High Street for 2017. At Next Home pendant lights, table lamps, and the large decorative bowls pictured above (my personal favourite) were a beautiful array of deep purples, blues and teals.

These drop pendants by Next are very Tom Dixon inspired.

BRASS TAKES OVER FROM COPPER:

Conran Caleb Task Floor Lamp, £149. Barclay Shelving, £399. Triple Geo Mirror, £149. Multi-tea Light Holder, £49.50. Conran Marble Book Ends, £29.50 for the set. Aria Trinket box, £29.50. Gold Triangular Hurricane, £29.50. Conran Tall Vase, £29.50. Photo frame TBC. All M&S.

Very little copper could be found at these SS17 High Street press shows. There were some copper kitchen utensils at Next Home, and a floor lamp at M&S, but overall brass was the main metallic element with it featuring heavily in both the M&S 'Luxe Revival' and 'Safari' collections.

What I loved about the M&S brass items were that they were a really shiny, gorgeous gold. There was no gold spray painting here (fine if you are DIYing of course! But not so great if you are paying hundreds of pounds out on furniture!)

NEW HOT TREND: VELVET SOFAS & CHAIRS

Dante Large Sofa in Velvet Graphite, £2099. Cushions from a selection, £25. Ava side table, £175. Bellagio champagne saucers, £19.50 for two. All M&S.

Velvet is coming back in fashion and it's also huge in the home for 2017, especially on chairs and sofas. Both the M&S and Next shows had sofas and footstools upholstered in rich blue velvets.

HERE TO STAY: MARBLE & BAR CARTS

Faux-marble effect hand dispenser and storage bowl, Next Home.

Unsurprising if brass is king for SS17, marble will still be everywhere next year. Gold and marble look SO good together, and at M&S Conran featured it across many of the accessories. At Next Home faux-marble could be found on bathroom accessories and even on a stylish kettle.

M&S had a very chic drinks trolley in their 'Luxe Revival' collection (see lead image), accompanied by exquisite champagne saucers. The Gatsby vibe lives on....

This large Conran faux-marble effect/gold wall mirror was a favourite - £99, M&S.

NEW HOT TREND: 70'S / WILLIAM MORRIS STYLE PRINTS

These items made up the M&S 'Soft vintage' collection. Georgia sofa in Blue Floral Jacquard, £1399. Vase & plates, price TBC. Cushions, from a selection, £25 each. William Morris prints and hanging frames, from £12-£25. All M&S.

Decorative florals that nod back to the 70's was definitely a trend coming through. More stylish than the standard shabby chic florals, there was a heavy William Morris influence in the patterns.

THE COLOURS OF SS17: YELLOW & DEEP BLUE/TEALS

Two photos above both of the 'Happiness' collection for Next Home.

Yellow is a colour associated with the spring & summer months and for SS17 it is bright and bold. No sorbet or lemon colours here, the yellows for the home next year are strong and vibrant.

The 70's inspired 'Marigold' collection by M&S. Medium sofa in Meroni Medallion Yellow, £1099. Jolie Chair in Baylie Damask Burnt Orange, £449. Hayward Coffee Table, £349. Sunflower Mirror, £59. Pressed glass vases, from a selection, £12-£25.

Deep, rich blues and teals were also featured a lot in wall colour, sofas & chairs and in accessories.

Blue and teal dominate at Next Home for SS17.

MY PICK: WHAT I'LL BUY:

Stella 4 light Chandelier, £129. Carraway Sideboard, £849. Hustle Print (framed), £55. Conran Corin Table Lamp, £89. Conran Small Glass Hurricane, £25. Deco Lantern, £25. All part of the 'Luxe Revival' range at M&S.

My absolute pick of the bunch was 'Luxe Revival' collection by Marks and Spencer. I absolutely loved the brass base and legs on the chairs and sofas, and spent a few days after the show cursing my own perfectly fine sofa at home that doesn't need replacing. I will be purchasing the Stella 4 Light Chandelier which at £129 is an absolute steal for a show-stopping light. I'll also be stocking up on a blush pink triangle embroidered cushion and the abstract teal cushion in place of a new sofa I guess! Top of the lust-list went to the Carraway Sideboard. Again, if I needed a sideboard, that would be it!

What do you think of the new collections for SS17? Is there anything you will be buying in February?
