Luxury Interiors On A Budget: The Amazing Wallpaper Collection Between Diane Hill And Rebel Walls

I was first introduced to Diane Hill a couple of years back when I read an interview with her in Estila Magazine. An image of her reading to her young daughter in a teal room adorned with intricate drawings of birds and florals on the wall behind them really drew me in. The interview revealed Diane to be an incredibly talented (yet exceptionally humble) person, so I started following her on Instagram. She had just started up her own business as a skilled painter and chinoiserie expert after struggling to find a balance between her full-time job with a luxury, hand-painted wall decor company and family life. Her account quickly became one of my favourites as she regularly filmed the process of coming up with a design, to hand-painting it on a wall or framing it as a print. Beautiful florals, butterflies and birds coloured in light blues, pinks and greys are mixed in on her Instagram grid, along with snapshots of her in her studio, or with her daughters or her dog.

Through her previous job, Diane got to train in China in chinoiserie (a style of decorative art that draws upon Chinese motifs and techniques). It’s a skill she uses to create her bespoke murals and wall coverings which are steeped in oriental tradition, but have her signature modern, feminine twist. Her designs adorn the most prestigious establishments, but now thanks to the forward-thinking wallpaper company Rebel Walls, we can all put one of Diane’s designs up in our home.

Diane has collaborated with Rebel Walls as part of their new collection called La Chinoiserie. She has contributed two designs in the collection, Chinoiserie Chic and Lush Foliage, which come in separate colourways of pearl gray, powder beige and jade green.

As of this month, you will be able to purchase these designs from £33 / m2, with Rebel Walls offering flexible sizing solutions so the murals will perfectly fit your space. This might seem more complicated that buying your traditional roll, but it actually avoids overprinting, extra expense and waste.

My favourite design from the collection is Chinoiserie Chic in Jade - I love the detailed birds and the lemons sprouting on the trees. It feels so chic and timeless, yet completely works within a contemporary space with modern furniture.

The great thing about the fine detail within chinoiserie is that it can be used on all walls, or just one wall to make an impressive feature and focal point. Personally, I also love it when it is sectioned out and contained within traditional wall panels which I feel ‘frames’ the drawings.
