How To Apply Window Film With The Window Film Company
The picture below is of the en-suite bathroom off our guest room at home. It is mainly used as the 'downstairs loo' as it is right by the kitchen in the basement. It has this lovely window that looks onto our back courtyard and then over to the kitchen window, however, this view can only be enjoyed when frequenting one of two places - either using the toilet or taking a shower! Safe to say whatever side of the window you are on, no-one is going to want to see someone else the other side of the glass:
The window goes right up to the ceiling and so the choices of window treatment have always been either a roller-blind or window film. I have never wanted a roller-blind as it would seem bulky on the window and would block out all the natural light when in use. The most obvious solution was window film which would block visibility but still keep the natural light, but there are two reasons as to why I have always held off getting any. Firstly, I've never seen any designs that I have really liked. There just did not seem to be any contemporary or modern designs that I could find that I loved. Secondly, this window has 12 panes of glass, and there was no way that I could be bothered ordering a sheet of film and then having to cut it all down to size myself. I could just envisage loads of wonky cut lines and peek-a-boo gaps as a result of my appalling measuring. However, when The Window Film Company got in touch and asked if I wanted to try out some of their window film, I was very pleasantly surprised to find that not only do they stock a wide range of window film from stylish brands like Mini Moderns and MissPrint, they also cut and send your film to you the exact size that you need it - not in one large roll if you don't want that! I measured my window panes and ordered a MissPrint design called 'Ditto' and look how it has come out! It looks so lovely, I'm so chuffed with it:
This film is a printed frostbrite design. The Window Film Company stock a wide range of patterns and designs in frostbrite from designers including Layla Faye, Kate Farley and Lindsey Lang. They also sell coloured films, house numbers and text, plus solar protection film for those of you in the new-build glass houses that heat up in the summer months. You can also hire a professional Window Film Company Installer if you don't feel confident, which leads me onto just how I installed the window film and how easy I found it. The answer is that it was SO much easier than I ever expected! To be honest, I thought it was going to be like a sticker - I imagined having to peel away the backing, then place it on the window in the right place first time so I didn't have to spend ages trying to peel it back off without ripping it in half. It was honestly NOTHING like that. Instead, you soak the film and soak the window in soapy water, then you easily glide it into place until you are happy with it. My window film order came with an applicator squeegee so all I needed was some water in a sprayable bottle, washing up liquid and some paper towels.
Before you apply your window film, make sure your windows are really clean. Any dust, chipped paint or condensation residue will get under the film and you will not get a smooth finish. I always find a microfibre cloth does a great job of getting rid of window grime.
Using a few drops of basic washing up liquid with some warm water, peel off the back of the film and spray the side of the film that is going to be placed onto the window.
With your film covered in washing up liquid and water, and your window being wet also, you can easily slip and slide your window film into place. The film is cut by computers by The Window Film Company so measurements are exact to your window pane size.
The squeegee supplied by The Window Film Company is perfect for pushing out the excess soapy water. I found working from top to bottom then side to side worked best to get rid of any air bubbles.
And that was it! Easy! It took me about 30 minutes to do my window and I had literally set aside a whole morning to do it. Once the windows dried out, the film was stuck solid to the window.
I really love the triangle MissPrint design. It looks modern yet at the same time it also has quite a pretty look about it. Anyone cooking in the kitchen, or the parcel delivery man who is leaving a parcel on the 'rear porch' is now saved from the sight of any bathroom activity. I'm delighted!
