When we moved into this house four years ago we inherited what I called ‘The Most Boring Bathroom In The World’. This en-suite is off a room in the basement that we use as my office / guest bedroom. It was adorned in the most basic, large white tiles and had an ivory-coloured window. I tried to add a large picture and a few accessories in here, but it didn’t really make much of a difference to how good it looked! The ceiling constantly peeled even though the shower was only used about twice a month, then when all the tiles started to crack it started looking even worse! I investigated whether we needed to look into some basement waterproofing, before considering the new design scheme.

While I was deliberating about what to do with this space I was contacted by Showerwall, a UK company who specialise in versatile, easy to fit bathroom wall panelling systems. They were interested in working with me to help promote their range of waterproof bathroom wall panels, but rather than a basic sponsored post, we came to the agreement that I would try out their custom acrylic panels by having them fitted in the en-suite. After constant cracking tiles and mouldy grout I was really interested in the fact the panels came as one piece, meaning there was no need for grout and they were super-easy to wipe clean. The shower in this room often doubles up as a dog bath after muddy walks, so a simple, watertight, hygienic, easy-clean solution really appealed.
After ordering some samples from Showerwall’s wide-range of designs, I was pulled towards a marble-effect panel, but then decided to go crazy. Why not go for an on-trend, totally blush pink bathroom? Showerwall offer the option to design your own custom panels, which provided me with the perfect opportunity to inject my own style into this small space. Small toilets and en-suites are actually the areas of your home where you can have the most fun with the decor, as you only spend a very short period of time in the space. As there will not be not a large surface area to cover, you can really go wild with pattern and colour and make it a really fun room to enter.

After living with the plain white tiles, I really wanted this bathroom to be one block colour. Still being in love with my fish-scale tiles on my kitchen splashback one year on, I decided to go for Showerwall’s custom option and have a scallop design in pink printed on durable, glass-like acrylic. I would then paint the rest of the room pink to match the panels.

So, without further delay, here is the BIG REVEAL:

I had builders install these panels for me and they removed the old tiles, made sure the walls were flat and level and then stuck on the panels using Showerwall’s mega-grab adhesive. As this room is very small and the walls were wonky, they decided that this was the best plan of action. However, Showerwall panels can be stuck over existing tiles, so if you are not short on space and your tiled wall is flat then you can simply stick panels over the top.

Where corners met, a thin strip of silicone was applied to the acrylic to keep it watertight. My builder used a pink-coloured silicone to match the panels. Where panels joined together on the wall, there is a very faint line where they meet (like wallpaper). However, as the panels can be printed 1220mm wide x 2400mm high, there are only a couple of joins in my bathroom. The whole room is easy to maintain and fuss-free. I just use a damp cloth and wipe it along the panels when needed!

As my panels went all around the room and had a pattern that needed to be matched, I had the professionals in. However, if you are simply panelling a shower cubicle, around a bath or one wall, these panels are super-easy to install for the DIY confident.
