Spring Mantel Floral Garland Decor Idea Using Faux Flowers
Who says that elaborate fireplace mantel designs are only for Christmas? Spring and Easter for me signify moving out of winter, and I cannot get enough of the pretty yellow and pastel tones that accompany the season. This year, I created this spring mantel design as part of a working collaboration with Hobbycraft*. It is all created with faux foliage, so it will last the whole holiday period!
I secured all the flowers to the mantel using dry foam blocks. Unlike oasis blocks for real foliage, these require no water, so the blocks can be reused. A soaked oasis block for real flowers will be heavy and will be able to keep a design sturdy and upright. In contrast, the dry blocks are light, so I tied 0.5kg weight plates on the underside of the blocks with garden twine to hold them down. To get some height on the left-hand side, I placed a foam block vertically on top of another and secured it to the base block with BBQ skewers. You can see a video on how I did this on my Instagram page.
To start, I shaped the design around the mirror with the tall cherry blossom. As the faux foliage contains wire in the stems, I was able to bend it into position. I used the cherry blossom to create a half-moon shape around the circular mirror, before filling out the design so the foam blocks could not be seen.
To balance out each end of the mantel, I added an Easter tree to the right so that I could hang decorative eggs and other easter decorations. The branches are twisted willow branches, sprayed in white paint. They are contained in a glass vase filled with decorative eggs, which help hold the shape of the branches, as well as making it look pretty.
To finish off the design I added in some wood slices, grass-covered bunny rabbits and painted eggs. Some of these I pushed into the flowers to add an extra layer to the florals.
I really hope you like my design! Is this something you would do to decorate your home in spring?
* I was hired by Hobbycraft to create this floral installation for coverage on their social media, upon which all products required to make it were supplied free of charge. I am documenting the process of the installation on my blog as a personal decision. I did not receive a fee for its publication on my website.
